ABOUT US
OVALTINE ® was developed in 1904 by Dr. George Wander, along with a German professor from the University of Berne in Switzerland. Among the doctors of Europe at that time, there was a strong belief in the need for a special food that would meet the nutritional requirements of seriously ill people.
After years of research, Dr. George Wander, and later his son, Dr. Albert Wander, found that a combination of whole milk, eggs, barley and malt extract would provide the necessary nourishment needed by the sick. Called Ovalmaltine, the product was brought to the United States around 1905. In the early 1900s, it was prescribed by medical professionals as a fortified supplement.
Over the years, OVALTINE has become a well-known household brand, known as a nutritional beverage that kids and families love! Some fun and interesting history about OVALTINE:
- OVALTINE was a sponsor of the “Little Orphan Annie” radio show which was on from 1931-1940.
- OVALTINE was a key part of the “Captain Midnight” radio show from 1938-1949.
- In 1983, the movie, “A Christmas Story” featured OVALTINE in a key part when Ralphie decodes a message on his favorite radio show, “Be sure to drink your OVALTINE!”
Rich Chocolate OVALTINE, the most popular flavor, was introduced in the United States in 1985. More recently, OVALTINE joined the NESTLÉ family of brands in 2008 where we’ve been happy to have it as part of our portfolio. At its core, OVALTINE is sold as a great and tasty way for kids to add essential vitamins and minerals to their diets. Many of our fans appreciate that we have such a rich history in doing this.
